West of Malaga and east of Cadiz, in the Strait of Gibraltar area, an authentic biogeographic crossroads of high international interest, the Sierra Bermeja and de Las Nieves Natural Park has such important nature systems, it is included in the Natura 2000 network and in the Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean, Spain and Morocco. It is time, in the twenty-first century in Spain, to encourage the creation of the third national park in Andalusia, The Sierra Bermeja and Las Nieves National Park, enriching the National Parks network with the contribution of two unique ecosystems that this Network is currently lacking: the Spanish firs and Serpentine ecosystems.
The National Park will ensure the conservation of the Sierra Bermeja ultramafic massif and the Spanish firs of the Sierra de las Nieves and Sierra Bermeja itself, under legal control and unified management. This will be the most effective way to ensure the National Park's objectives, according to the IUCN priority strategies. The creation of the Sierra Bermeja and Las Nieves National Park will also be a significant contribution to the conservation of unique and fragile ecosystems for generations to come, strengthening our network of National Parks, the International Biosphere Reserve of Spain and Morocco and the fight against Global Climate Change. This is a contribution to the health of our small, battered planet.
