Difference between residency and municipal registration

A residency regulates legal length of stay on Spanish territory through the Ministry of the Interior, either through visas, temporary or permanent residence permits. It falls under the competence of the Central Government (national ambit).

The “padrón” or municipal registration is simply inscription on the municipal census of a town or city, regulated by its Town Hall, regardless of someone’s country of residence.

It falls under the competence of the Town Hall (municipal ambit), specifically Marbella in our case.
